Model 870 Barrels with 3" chambers will fit both magnum and 2-3/4" receivers and will handle both 2-3/4" and 3" shells with a magnum receiver. (An M at the end of the serial number = magnum receiver.) Use only 2-3/4" shells when barrels are used on 2-3/4" receivers. 870 Special Field barrels and other model 870 barrels are not interchangeable. The 20-ga. lightweight barrels will not fit 20-ga. standard guns.

Remingtons manufactured after 1921 have a code located on the left side of the barrel near the frame that identifies the year and month of manufacture. The following letters correspond to the months of the year, for example B=January, L= February and so on:

Using barrel codes (such as those listed above) to date the manufacture are reliable on Remington rifles, as the company rarely changed barrels on a customer's rifle.

Using these barrel codes to date a shotgun is somewhat unreliable, as shotgun barrels are often interchanged at random. One needs to be sure that the barrel is original to the gun before trusting the Barrel Code listing, above.

(*) On 8/9/99, stopped stamping the barrels with the date code. They continued to mark the date code on the end flap of the shipping box. They resumed stamping the date code on the barrel on 10/1/01.

* These Model 11-87 12ga. barrels are not equipped with a pressure compensation gas system.  Target barrels are intended for use with target ammunition only (3-1/4 dr. powder, 1-1/4 oz. lead shot - max.)

NOTE: The fore-end of a light contour Model 11-87 may not fit over a standard contour extra barrel.  Alteration to the LC fore-end or the use of a standard Model 11-87 fore-end may be required.

1. Rifle Sighted Rem Choke deer barrels supplied with Rifled and Improved Cylinder Choke tubes.
2. Cantilever Rem Choke deer barrels supplied with Improved Cylinder and Extended Rifled choke tubes.

 

All Rem-Chokes (except deer) are supplied with Improved Cylinder, Modified, and Full Choke tubes. Deer barrels with Rem-Chokes are supplied with Rifled and Improved Cylinder tubes.  Steel shot barrels supplied with Full choke only.
